For Girls Who Don’t Want to Look Like They’re Hustling: Affordable Self-Care Ideas to Look Soft, Clean & Put-Together
Written by: Grace Jerome
A lot of ladies are hustling, building, trying again, recovering from disappointment, managing family stress, work stress, relationship stress, money stress, and still trying to look like life is not dragging them by the edges.
You're trying your best to make your life better without having to depend on anyone. You should be proud of yourself. Especially as a woman, people should respect your hustle, and they may actually respect it.
But! If your hustle starts to show on your face and body, that's another conversation.
Let's be honest.
Society won't let you go. You're not allowed to look anything less than 'fresh.' Sometimes it's even family who starts the "i-just-want-what's-better-for-you" comments—although that's not particularly a bad thing.
The good news? You don’t need to do everything at once.
Self-care is not always luxury spa dates and expensive skincare shelves. Sometimes it is sunscreen, clean bedsheets, neat hair, a cute lounge outfit, tea after heavy food, a happy series, and the courage to try again tomorrow.
These correct habits will compound and keep you looking good and healthy.
So let’s break it down into two parts:
1. Outer care—the things that help you look better quickly.
2. Accumulating care—the small habits and smart purchases that make you look and feel better over time.
Part 1: Outer Care—The Things People Notice First
1. Start With Simple Skin Care, Not a 10-Step Routine
Please don’t copy every 10-step skincare routine you see online. Everyone has something to sell these days; it's not necessarily for your own good.
It's very important for you to find out your skin type. With N20,000 - N30,000, you can see a dermatologist. Get the full value for your money; research questions before your appointment, get the list of ingredients that fit your skin type, the best type of facials for your skin etc
Nigerian weather, your budget, your skin type, sweat, dust, sun, and hormones are all part of the story. What works for a Korean skincare influencer may not work for you in the Lagos heat and environment.
Start simple:
- Face wash, moisturizer, sunscreen
- Lip balm, exfoliator
- Pimple patch
- Eye mask or under-eye patch
- Hand cream, foot cream
- Face, hand, and leg masks when needed
Sunscreen especially is not “oyinbo skincare.” It's non-negotiable. If you’re treating dark spots, acne marks, dull skin, or uneven tone, sunscreen matters.
2. Add Small Beauty Tools When Your Budget Allows
Some tools are not compulsory, but they can make your self-care feel more serious.
You can try:
- Steam towel, soft face towels
- Mini face steamer, soft face scrub tool set
- LED mask
- Facial ice roller
Also, with consistent planning, you can afford one professional session occasionally — like a chemical peel or microneedling session — if your skin needs it and you’re going to a trusted place.
My tip: book during festive seasons, anniversary sales, Black Friday, Valentine promos, Christmas discounts, or brand promo periods. That is when many beauty brands and spas reduce prices.
3. Hair Care: Don’t Underestimate a Bonnet
A lot of ladies underestimate how much a bonnet helps.
A good bonnet can help your hair stay neat longer, reduce friction, protect braids, preserve curls, and stop your hair from looking scattered every morning.
Also get the basics:
- Comb set, brush set, edge brush
- Satin bonnet, satin scarf
- Hair mist, hair oil
And please use YouTube. You don’t need to know everything already. Learn how to refresh braids, lay your edges, style natural hair, pack a clean bun, revive curls, or style a simple wig properly.
Sometimes the difference between “She looks worn out” and “She looks pretty” is just knowing what to do with your hair.
4. Clean Makeup Over Heavy Makeup
You don’t need full glam every day. Clean makeup is usually enough to make you look awake and put-together. The more you practice, the more tricks you find.
Think:
- Neat brows
- Light skin tint or powder
- Concealer where needed
- Lip gloss or lip tint
- Mascara, simple eyeliner
- Setting spray
The goal is not to look like you’re going for a wedding. The goal is to look fresh, effortless, and alive.
5. Manicure and Pedicure Without Overspending
Your hands and feet matter.
Press-on nails cost N1,200 - N3,500. Normal toe polish costs N2,000 - N6,000
If salon nails are not in the budget, press-on nails and regular nail polish can still make you look clean and feminine. They are affordable, easy to change, and you can even do them at home.
Also, regular nail polish saves you from frequent exposure to manicure/pedicure LED machines. You don’t have to stop gel completely if you like it, but it’s good to have affordable non-gel options too.
Try to get:
- Press-on nails, regular nail polish
- Cuticle oil, nail file
- Foot scrub, foot cream
Soft girl does not mean expensive girl. Lol, it does, but you know what I mean. Clean nails and soft feet already do plenty.
Part 2: Accumulating Care — The Habits That Make You Look Better Over Time
6. Clean Bedsheets and Pillowcases Are Beauty Care
This one is not popular, but it works.
Change your pillowcase and bedsheets often. Change your pillowcase once every 2-3 days depending on how often you go out. Your face, hair, sweat, oil, skincare, dust, and products all touch them.
Also consider:
- Getting sleep eye mask
- Wearing a hair bonnet to sleep
- Using a satin pillowcase
- Clean towel for your face
7. Food Is Self-Care Too
Those that know, know. Sometimes it is what you’re feeding your body.
You can still enjoy comfort food, but balance it.
Ideas:
- Less or zero sugar
- Mint tea or green tea
- Fruits, detox water, smoothies
- Menstrual health teas
- Get small plates for portioned carbs
- Protein-rich meals, less carbohydrates
- Noodles upgraded with egg/vegetables
- Chicken, turkey, fish, or suya with moderation
The point is not punishment. The point is balance.
8. Create a Pretty Corner in Your Room
This feeds your visual and mental health. You don’t need to redesign your whole room.
Start with one corner.
You can add:
- Pretty wallpaper
- Bedside table, small mirror
- Mini lamps
- Phone stand, tablet stand
- Tray, mini storage basket
- Scented candle
- Flower vase
A pretty corner makes it easier to take pictures and admire your beauty, journal, do skincare, watch dramas, or just feel like your comfort space.
9. Cute Lounge Outfits Keep You Put-together
You cannot be tying wrapper every weekend and expect to feel like a soft-life girl.
Comfort is important, but looking good, attractive, and fresh is a discipline.
Try:
- Boubou lounge dress
- Two-piece lounge set
- Satin robe, soft pyjamas
- Sweatshirt set (if you use ACs a lot)
- Cute slippers
- Bonnet or scarf that matches the vibe
It does not have to be expensive. It just has to make you feel clean, relaxed, and pretty.
10. Emotional Self-Care Is Not Only for “Oyinbo People”
Have you tried declutter of the mind?
With all the stress of disappointment, getting courage to try again, failed plans, financial pressure, relationship drama, family wahala, and the emotional beating your mind takes, you need to pay attention to your inner life too.
Try:
- Muting stressful chats
- Journal for 10 minutes
- Cry if you need to
- Reflect
- Create a gratitude list
- Stop doom-scrolling.
- Talk to a friend who does not drain you.
- Listen to good music
- Rest without guilt
Looking good is not only about your face. Sometimes stress is showing because your mind has not rested in months.
Take care of your inside too.
11. Watch a Happy Series
Happy is the key word. Don't watch what will make your blood boil.
Watch something that makes you smile or laugh.

Self-Care Budget Ideas
You don’t need to buy everything at once. Just start, and it will accumulate until you have everything. Waiting till you can afford everything at once almost never works.

₦40k Self-Care: Sunscreen, bonnet, skincare basics, basic beauty tools, press-on nails, lounge outfit, room spray or mini lamp
Pick the budget that matches your reality this month.
Self-care should not put you under pressure. The whole point is to reduce pressure.
BONUS: Smart Soft-Life Shopping Tips
1. Buy Expensive but Necessary Items During Sales
For things like steamers, LED masks, skincare sets, bedding, or beauty devices, wait for festive discounts.
Look out for Valentine's sales, Ramadan/Eid sales, Independence Day promos, Black Friday, Christmas sales, and brand anniversary sales
Create a savings and budget and use these events as deadlines.
2. Ask Brands for a Discount or Affiliate Code
If you buy something and people keep asking where you got it, dm or email the brand.
Ask politely:
“Hello, I bought xx product, and people are asking for it a lot. Do you have a discount code or affiliate link I can share?”
Some brands will say yes. Use that extra money on yourself. You were part of the selling point after all.
3. Buy With Friends and Ask for a Group Discount
If you and your girls want the same bonnet, robe, skincare product, face mask pack, or beauty tool, ask for a group discount.
Once you’re three or more, some vendors are more likely to agree.
Also, split delivery fee. There is no reason for everybody to pay separate delivery if you stay close to each other or see each other often.
4. Share Self-Care Equipment With Trusted Friends
If you live close to your friends, you can contribute to buying some self-care equipment together.
Examples: Face steamer, LED mask, tripod, mini ring light, foot spa, wax warmer, nail kit
Just make sure hygiene is at the forefront and everyone is clean, careful, and responsible with shared items.
