The Evil Effect Of “Godfatherism” In The Nigerian Music Industry (The Mohbad Saga).

Over the past week, we’ve seen how many things have been unfolding since the passing away of the super talented Mohbad. There have been countless comments and reactions on different social media platforms, ranging from outrage to grief!

Now, with fear and certainty, we have realized that there is so much evil and danger in the act of godfatherism in this part of Africa.

Mohbad was, no doubt, a superstar. One who had to go through the rough process of godfatherism to make a name for himself in the music industry As if that were not enough, they made him owe his entire life to them, wanting him to understand that he is a pawn and will forever be.

Mohbad was not lazy; this young man had already been hustling and struggling for a better future before he joined Marlian Music. The level of godfatherism in the Nigerian system runs too deep. Not just in the music sector but in all sectors you can think about. Believe it or not, this is hurting every young person’s dream of a better life, i.e., why so many youth seem to be justifying fraud because they just want to break out of the poverty cycle. The godfatherism system in Nigeria kills dreams; most of these godfathers just want to use you to their own advantage.

"Godfatherism" in the Nigerian music industry refers to a phenomenon where established and influential individuals or entities, often with significant power and resources, exert control or influence over the careers and success of up-and-coming artists. This practice is not unique to the music industry and can be found in various aspects of Nigerian society, including politics and other entertainment industries like Nollywood (the Nigerian film industry).

Here are some key points to understand about godfatherism in the Nigerian music industry:

Financial Support: Godfathers in the music industry may provide financial support to emerging artists, helping them with recording expenses, music video production, and promotional activities. In return, they often expect a share of the artist's earnings and creative control.

Connections and Opportunities: These influential figures often have extensive networks and connections within the music industry. They can help artists secure collaborations, access to recording studios, and opportunities to perform at high-profile events.

Protection and Promotion: Godfathers may protect their proteges from industry challenges, such as copyright disputes and unfair contracts. They may also use their influence to promote the artist's work through media and industry channels.

Control and Influence: In some cases, godfathers can exert control over the artist's creative direction and business decisions. This can lead to conflicts if the artist wishes to maintain their independence and artistic integrity.

Dependency and Loyalty: Emerging artists who rely heavily on godfathers for support may find themselves in a position of dependency. Loyalty to the godfather can become a significant factor in their career, potentially limiting their creative freedom.

Criticism and Controversy: Godfatherism in the Nigerian music industry has faced criticism, with some arguing that it can stifle creativity and hinder the growth of the industry. Others argue that it can provide much-needed support and mentorship to new talent.

It's important to note that not all relationships between established figures and emerging artists in the Nigerian music industry are negative or exploitative. Some mentors genuinely aim to help artists succeed while offering guidance and support. However, the potential for abuse of power and exploitation remains a concern in such relationships. The Nigerian music industry continues to evolve, and artists are increasingly seeking ways to maintain greater control over their careers and creative processes, including through the use of digital platforms and social media.

RIP MOHBAD
